When to Involve WVU Research Security
Any international research activity or collaboration that involves the following circumstances requires coordination with WVU’s Research Security Program (RSP) or other applicable offices:
- Signing a contract, memorandum of understanding, or other agreement.
- Transferring or receiving data, materials, or proprietary information.
- Entering into any agreement related to intellectual property (IP).
- Hosting or sponsoring international visitors or collaborators.
- Accepting a foreign appointment, paid position, or employment.
- Operating or supervising a research laboratory.
- Conducting research supported by financial or in-kind contributions, compensation, or defined time commitments.
Note: If the collaboration relates to your WVU research or professional
responsibilities, discuss the activity with your
Department Chair or Dean’s Office before proceeding. Many international
activities may also require prior review under
WVU’s Outside Professional Activities and Interests Policy.
