Protecting Research Integrity at WVU

WVU’s Research Security Program safeguards the University’s research enterprise by ensuring that our scholars, students, and collaborators can pursue discovery securely, ethically, and in compliance with federal and institutional requirements.

What is Research Security?

Research security refers to the policies, processes, and technologies that help protect research from theft, misuse, or inappropriate influence.

Federal agencies require institutions like WVU to maintain a comprehensive research security program. This means:

  • Securing sensitive and proprietary data.
  • Managing disclosures and conflicts of interest.
  • Promoting transparency in international collaborations.
  • Complying with export control laws and cybersecurity standards.

Together, these measures ensure that WVU researchers can continue advancing knowledge while maintaining public trust and national integrity.

Disclosure Management

WVU faculty and staff must disclose outside activities, financial interests, and foreign collaborations to identify and manage potential conflicts of interest before they affect research integrity.

International Activities

WVU provides guidance for travel, data sharing, and partnerships with foreign institutions to ensure compliance and safeguard intellectual property.

Cyber/Data Security

Protecting research data starts with strong cybersecurity. WVU researchers must follow University IT and data-security standards for any system that handles research data, including Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI).

Export Control

Export controls regulate sharing certain research materials or data with foreign persons or outside the U.S. Check with Research Security before shipping equipment, hosting collaborators, or traveling with research devices.

Stay Compliant

What you must do now

Faculty, staff, and students must complete required research-security training, disclose outside activities, and follow WVU data-protection standards.
